AN EDUCATIONAL INTERVENTION FOR COMFORTABLE MENOPAUSAL TRANSITION AMONG WOMEN OF OUTPATIENTS' CLINICS, EL-MINIA GENERAL HOSPITAL.

Abstract Background; Every woman has to go through menopause some time in her life. It is just a natural transition from a fertile person to a non-fertile person. Menopause causes variety of uncomfortable physical and psychological symptoms due to hormonal changes. Menopausal symptoms are hot flashes, urinary problems, vaginal changes, loss of interest in sex (libido), insomnia, mood swings, depression and headaches. Women today are looking for a natural approach to manage and to relief common health problems of pre-menopausal and menopausal periods. This study aimed to; Assess, implement and evaluate an educational intervention to women for comfortable menopausal transition. Methodology; It is a Quasi experimental study design, with a sample of sixty two women were selected randomly from Obstetric and Gynecology Out Patients' Clinics in Minia General Hospital, within the age of 35 to more than 55 years old and were categorized according to menopausal stages. Data was gathered at baseline and posttest done immediately after termination of the intervention while follow-up test done after a period of three months. Results; The mean age of the participants was 51± 8.7, it was found that 93.5%, 77.4%, 74.2%, 71.0%, 67.7% and 22.6% were complaining of hot flushing, vaginal dryness, headache & constipation, urinary incontinence, nervousness & irritability, and vaginal bleeding respectively. A significant improvement was detected regarding the hot flushing, vaginal dryness, headache, constipation, nervousness, irritability and urinary incontinence between pre-test and follow-up test. The participants' knowledge about menopause, & management of menopausal health problems, and also the performance of deep breathing exercise, mind/physical relaxation technique, and kegel exercise were improved with highly significant differences between pre-test and follow-up test. Conclusion: Women have poor menopausal knowledge, its health problems and the actions to be done for minimizing its effects. Improvement was noted in women knowledge, skills, and the occurrence of most menopausal problems after the implementation of the educational intervention. Recommendation: Additional educational program and interventions should be done to manage post-menopausal health problems related to hormonal deficits.
