" Post Abortion Family Planning Counseling as a Tool to Increase Uses of Family Planning Methods ".

AbstractThis study carried out to show the effect of post abortion counseling in increasing usage of contraceptive methods and prevent unwanted pregnancy . Family planning counseling is one of the most effective strategies to reduce abortion rates and maternal morbidity and mortality. Therefore, providing post-abortion family planning services that include structured contraceptive counseling with free and easy access to all kinds of contraceptive methods can be suitable. Method: Design: A prospective study. Setting: The family planning clinic at General Hospital at El Minia City which runs a serve to the lower socio-economic populations. Post abortion counseling is introduced by using proper communication skills and with using appropriate methods to women. In this study we introduced contraceptive usage of women who had recently abortion and followed by family planning clinic at General Hospital at El Minia City. Tool: Interviews were carried out with emphasis on the inclusion criteria and the interviewing questionnaire sheet which included age of women, parity, educational level, previous abortion, desire for previous fertility, reasons shown by women for not using contraceptive methods, used methods before or after abortion, factors affecting their uses. Results: 38 of our clients were not using contraceptive methods before abortion. At the end of the one year, 200 of our followed-up clients revealed that they were using one of the contraceptive methods as follows: There was 16 women with IUD before counseling. 36 women had IUD after counseling and pills usage was 30% after counseling. Contraceptive pills was 28.5% and became 30% after counseling "A contraceptive methods counseling was introduced immediately after abortion" was the most important factor increasing contraceptive methods usage. Conclusion: Our results advocate that post-abortion counseling may be an effective tool to increase the usage of contraceptives. Improved and more qualified post-abortion family planning counseling should be an integral part of abortion services. Recommendation: More qualified counseling techniques including proper communication skills is required in post abortion period.
