The Department of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine organizes a distinctive interactive day for patients with Phenylketonuria (PKU) and their families at the University Hospital. The event aims to enhance awareness of how to live with the condition and provide the necessary nutritional and health support.
Prof. Yahya Zakaria Eid affirms that the university pays great attention to awareness and service activities targeting patients and their families. He notes that organizing such events reflects the university’s leading societal role and its commitment to supporting the most vulnerable groups in need of specialized care, especially children with chronic and rare diseases.
He adds that the university’s mission is not limited to providing educational and medical services alone; it extends to building comprehensive health awareness within society and presenting a true model of integrated humanitarian care. Dealing with PKU patients requires an integrated system that includes early diagnosis, precise medical follow-up, and continuous awareness for families on how to manage the special dietary regimen — something the university administration is keen to embody through this interactive day.
Prof. Yahya Zakaria Eid explains that the university works to harness all the capabilities of its university hospitals to provide the best medical services according to the latest international standards, with a focus on the psychological and social aspects for patients. Building a healthy individual is not achieved through treatment alone, but also through support, care, and education.
On his part, Prof. Taha Ahmed Ismail, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board, states that this event is within the faculty’s plan to strengthen medical awareness activities and link the academic and practical aspects, which positively reflects on the level of healthcare services provided to patients.
Prof. Hany Hamed, Executive Director of University Hospitals, points out that university hospitals are keen on providing integrated programs for patients with chronic diseases, noting that nutritional awareness is a fundamental element in dealing with PKU patients.
Prof. Jamal Shams, Director of the University Hospital, affirms that holding the event inside the hospital’s kitchen reflects a practical approach to training families on preparing suitable meals. He praises the fruitful cooperation between the various departments in serving patients.
In the same context, Prof. Osama El-Agamy, Head of the Pediatrics Department, explains that the interactive day aims to empower families to deal correctly with the disease, exchange experiences, and provide psychological support for the children. He notes that the department is keen on organizing such initiatives on a regular basis.
The event features interactive activities inside the University Hospital kitchen, where practical models for preparing suitable meals for affected children are presented. Detailed explanations are given to parents about healthy dietary systems that help improve patients’ quality of life and reduce disease complications.
At the end of the day, specialized meals and gifts are distributed to the participating children in a warm, humanitarian atmosphere filled with joy and psychological support. This reflects the university and its hospitals’ commitment to providing comprehensive care that goes beyond the therapeutic aspect to include community and psychological support.
